Over the past year, I have posted many quotes. I am so pleased that many of you have enjoyed and shared your thoughts on them. But have you ever wondered why I like to post quotes so much? Well, it goes way back to when I was about 17 years old. I lived at home with my single mother, who was rarely home because she worked many hours, so we could have a roof over our heads and food on the table. At the time, I resented the fact that I was alone so much. Yes, she did leave me with way too much time to get into trouble but she also gave me a wonderful gift. The gift of boredom and silence. It was during one of these moments of boredom, I found the book Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach, in my home. I remember examining it like it was a foreign object because...well, lets just say it was quite unusual for us to have these type of books in our home. Anyhow, I read it... and it has left me with an impression that has forever changed my life.
This book came to me during a time I felt so much confusion, doubt and anger. I went from feeling there was no hope for inner peace to realizing I have an ultimate purpose in life and there was no way I was going to figure it out if I didn't take my journey's first flight. And so I did. Whenever I felt I was losing my way, I'd go back to the book for quotes like these:
“Who is more responsible than a gull who finds and follows meaning, a higher purpose for life? For a thousand years we have scrabbled after fish heads, but now we have a reason to live – to learn, to discover, to be free! “
"What he had once hoped for the Flock, he now gained for himself alone; he learned to fly, and was not sorry for the price that he had paid."
“You will begin to touch heaven, Jonathan, in the moment that you touch perfect speed. And that isn’t flying a thousand miles an hour, or a million, or flying at the speed of light. Because any number is a limit, and perfection doesn’t have limits. Perfect speed, my son, is being there.”
Quotes became my own personal messages from a higher being. Always guiding me in the right direction. One day, after reading a quote from Jonathan Livingston Seagull, I realized I was not a human existing but a human being. Finding my inner peace allowed me to be the person I am today but from time to time, I am quite hard on myself when there is more noise and confusion than usual.
So, my October intention, to piece together peace, is to be gentle on myself when life gets noisy and confusing because inner peace creates outer peace.

The other morning, my children were still sleeping and I did something I rarely do...I sat in a quiet room and did nothing. Well, I was enjoying the cup of coffee, my dear husband, makes me every morning but I didn't check my email, I didn't hang the laundry on the line and I wasn't reading a book or a magazine. I was simply just being. This was something my soul really needed to do, since the day before was quite frustrating and stressful. No matter what was going on I couldn't help but get angry. Anger is emotion I am extremely uncomfortable with. Right now my husband would be saying, "Really?" (Yes, I know, I should probably work on that. Any suggestions?) Let's just say I haven't been the easiest person to live with lately.
While I was having my moment of silence, something wonderful began to happen. Without force, the anger was pushed aside and only then was my soul fueled with joy. How? I began to, organically, think of all the things I am grateful for. It was as if my body/mind knew what needed to be done to get to a smile. Here are my grateful thoughts that brought me to the point of bliss:
What are you grateful for?

Man lives to move forward. To move forward is to live more. To live more is to be more and do more; and it is being and doing that constitutes the path to happiness. The more you are and the more you do, the richer your life, the greater your joy. But being and doing must always live together as one. To try to be much and not try to do much, is to find life a barren waste. To try to do much and not try to be much, is to find life a burden too heavy and wearisome to bear. The being of much gives the necessary inspiration and the necessary power to the doing of much. The doing of much gives the necessary expression to the being of much. And it is the bringing forth of being through the act of doing that produces happiness that is happiness. Being much gives capacity for doing much. Doing much gives expression to the richest and the best that is within us. And the more we increase the richness of that which is within us, the more we increase our happiness, provided we increase, in the same proportion, the expression of that greater richness. The first essential is provided for by the being of much; the second, by the doing of much; and the secret of both may be found by him who lives to move forward.

Be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. Talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet. Make all your friends feel there is something special in them. Look at the sunny side of everything. Think only of the best, work only for the best, and expect only the best. Be as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. Forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. Give everyone a smile. Spend so much time improving yourself that you have no time left to criticize others. Be too big for worry and too noble for anger.

Write Down Your Goals
By Al Argo,
“If you don’t write your goal down on paper,
Beware, it may try to be an escaper.
But when you do write your goal in your journal,
What you have done is planted a kernel.
And everyone, who knows anything knows,
That what a man reaps is what a man sows!
So write down your hopes and journal your goals
And press on through the highs and the lows.
Through the thick and through the thin,
If you never, never quit – eventually you win.
In every failure is a seed of success,
So keep trying, keep trying –
And you’ll be the best.
Write down your goals
And surprise the rest.”

As 2009 comes to an end, I leave it feeling...grateful. It certainly was one of the roughest years my family has ever been through but we are feeling whole and strong. There is no denying we are ready for 2010. Not because we now have strength, but because we know whatever comes our way will only teach us to find joy in small things, and to love harder. So, I begin the final day of 2009 with a few small things that put a smile on my face.
Enjoy this moment...since it is happening now. Choose to love, be happy, and be content with who you are and what you have. You will be amazed with how incredibly at peace you will feel.
Thank you for following my journey and I hope we continue it together after the New Year. hasta luego!

I particularly enjoyed Dave Eggers talk on how and why he opened 826 Valencia in 1998, a free writing and tutoring lab for young people, which has since opened six more chapters across the United States.
Please checkout the TED site. I think you might be surprisingly inspired. Enjoy!
